Discover Twisted Meats

Walking into Twisted Meats feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that knows exactly what it’s doing and doesn’t try too hard to prove it. Tucked away at 520 N Ventu Park Rd STE 160, Thousand Oaks, CA 91320, United States, this diner-style barbecue restaurant has quietly built a reputation for bold flavors, careful cooking, and a menu that keeps locals coming back. I stopped by on a busy weekend afternoon, and even with a steady line, the staff moved fast, knew the menu inside out, and happily explained the smoking process to first-timers.

The menu reads like a love letter to smoked meat fans. Brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and house-made sausages dominate the board, along with creative sides that actually hold their own. When I ordered the brisket plate, the server mentioned it spends over 12 hours in the smoker, a method backed by pitmaster best practices outlined by the Texas Barbecue Association, which emphasizes low-and-slow cooking for tenderness and flavor development. One bite confirmed it. The bark was firm, the inside buttery, and the smoke level balanced rather than overpowering. It’s the kind of meat people describe as fall-apart tender and packed with smoke flavor, and in this case, the description fits.

What stands out is the consistency. According to USDA guidelines, properly smoked beef should reach an internal temperature of about 195-203°F to break down connective tissue safely and effectively. Twisted Meats hits that mark reliably, which explains why reviews often mention texture as much as taste. I’ve eaten here multiple times over the past year, and the brisket hasn’t wavered once. That level of consistency usually comes from tight kitchen processes and experienced hands running the smokers daily.

The sides deserve attention too. The mac and cheese is rich without being greasy, while the slaw cuts through the meat with just enough acidity. During one visit, I chatted with a regular who comes in weekly for lunch and swears by the combo plates because they let you sample multiple meats without committing to just one. That practical approach shows the restaurant understands how people actually eat barbecue.

Reviews around Thousand Oaks often highlight portion sizes and value, and that checks out. The plates are generous, especially compared to chain barbecue spots. According to the National Restaurant Association, independent restaurants that focus on quality and portion balance tend to earn higher repeat-visit rates, and Twisted Meats fits that pattern well. You leave full, satisfied, and already planning what to order next time.

The atmosphere stays casual and welcoming, making it easy to drop in whether you’re grabbing takeout or sitting down with friends. The location is convenient for locals and nearby businesses, and parking is straightforward, which matters more than people admit. While the focus is clearly on meat, there are enough menu options to keep groups happy, even if not everyone wants the same thing.

One limitation worth noting is that popular items can sell out later in the day, especially brisket. That’s not unusual for real barbecue, but it’s good to arrive earlier if you have your heart set on a specific cut. In a way, it reinforces trust, since selling out often means food isn’t being rushed or reheated.

Overall, the experience feels genuine, built on technique, patience, and respect for the craft. It’s easy to see why locals talk about it as a go-to barbecue diner rather than just another restaurant. Every visit reinforces the sense that this place knows its strengths and sticks to them, delivering food that tastes like time, effort, and experience went into every plate.

  • Did the Wrap!! Listen when I say it’s fresh… it’s fresh! The seasoned and crisp veggies, the beef/lamb is beyond flavorful, hit it with the spicy and Tzatziki sauce! … PS, if you’re a feta cheese fan add that too! Sweet potatoes with a dash of the Twisted Meat rub brings the spice!! The patio with fresh herbs, spices and tomatoes boxes makes even the kids stop and say, “look mommy a tomato!” Enjoy, you won’t regret it!

  • I first tried the food from Twisted Meats at a birthday party and really enjoyed it. So when we were passing by we decided to give it another try and we really liked it. The staff was really friendly and attentive. The place was clean and parking was easy. The dressing were very nice.

  • I’m from Germany, Munich, and I usually eat Döner two to three times a week back home. I was really curious to see if this Döner in Thousand Oaks could compare to the ones in Germany. I was very surprised — it tastes exactly like a really good Döner in Germany! The meat is seasoned just the same, the bread and sauces give you that real feeling of home. This Döner would easily be among the top 5 in Munich, I can 100% recommend it to everyone. The staff is also very friendly and fast. Prices are totally fair.

  • My kids and I enjoy coming here fairly often because we consider it, “ food that’s fast but not fast food”. Our favorite things to get are the beef/lamb doner wrap, the salad, and the kids meal. The meat is very tasty and flavorful and the wrap is made from flour imported from Germany. It’s very thin so it holds the sandwich together, but not bulky. The baklava comes in just the right size 3 small pieces to an order that’s perfect for our family of 3. On top of the great food, the service is good. People are friendly and to top it all off they have fun music playing in the background. Oh and lastly, they are open pretty late at night like midnight as well so there have been times when i’m having a late night and want to eat something healthy. This is my go to place.

  • Great place with some awesome food. Unique selection of beers and sodas. Middle Eastern and German fusion with flare. The people working here were super polite.

  • I had a kebab sandwich and it was delicious. I had the lamb with garlic sauce and tzatziki and all the vegetables. I had a beer which I thought was a little pricey. My family of four cost about 110. Food is good. Worth a visit.
